Shell Malaysia announced Emily Yap as the grand prize winner of the #ShellPledge contest, which was held in conjunction with the Shell FuelSave College Competition 2014. As the grand prize winner, Emily will be among the first in the country to own the brand new Mazda2 SKYACTIV, co-sponsored by Bermaz Motors Trading Sdn Bhd, as the new generation car makes its debut in Malaysia.
Shell also presented a Samsung GALAXY Tablet each to three second prize winners, a Jawbone Bluetooth Portable Speaker each to five third prize winners and Starbucks Gift Cards to 20 consolation prize winners.
The contest garnered over 15,000 entries on the Shell Pledge Wall, which is featured on the Shell Malaysia website at www.shell.com.my. The pledges showcased an interesting collection of witty, light-hearted and educational photos and captions around smarter mobility, fuel efficiency and being better drivers on the road.
According to Tuan Haji Azman Ismail, Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn. Bhd. and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd., the public response to the #ShellPledge contest was inspiring, with thousands sharing their tips on smarter driving habits and fuel efficiency.
“The enthusiasm, creativity and originality in the photos and captions submitted were very impressive. We are truly excited that we were able to reach so many people through the sheer effort and diligence of the 2014 Shell FuelSave College Competition teams. We hope that by making a #ShellPledge, participants will sincerely take the effort to practise fuel efficiency and in turn, play a part in achieving a sustainable energy future that will benefit us all,” he added.
The #ShellPledge contest was introduced in the 2014 Shell FuelSave College Competition that challenges students from public and private universities to plan and execute an integrated marketing and communications campaign to promote fuel efficiency and educate Malaysia’s Gen Y drivers on smarter driving habits.
This year, participating teams were tasked to persuade members of the public to make a commitment to practise fuel efficiency by making a #ShellPledge. The student-led call for pledges was driven through a month-long social media campaign, as well as on-ground activities designed to reach out further and drive the #ShellPledge.
The teams took up the challenge of collecting pledges with a healthy competitive spirit and did an outstanding job in winning pledges by emphasising the importance of being fuel efficient, along with the chance to win the new Mazda2 SKYACTIV.
“As a brand that is also passionate about improving fuel economy through our innovative new-generation SKYACTIV Technology, we are thrilled to be part of the Shell FuelSave College Competition 2014 and the #ShellPledge contest, which encouraged the public to make an effort to be better fuel efficient drivers. We applaud this initiative by Shell, which not only provides our youth a unique experience in showcasing their skills by executing a public-driven marketing and communications plan, but also spreads the greater message of fuel efficiency to Malaysians,” said Ms. Lee Ai Hoon, General Manager of Marketing, Bermaz Motors Trading Sdn Bhd.
The #ShellPledge contest ran in October 2014, during which members of the public had to submit a photo and caption on Instagram or via www.shell.com.my/shellpledge with a message on smarter driving habits and fuel efficiency tips. Submissions were hashtagged #ShellPledge to be eligible for the contest.
Grand prize winner, Emily Yap, was overjoyed with winning the Mazda2 SKYACTIV.
“It’s unbelievable! I am absolutely ecstatic to have won the car. My husband told me about this contest and I thought it would be fun to enter but never thought I would actually win,” she remarked excitedly.
We certainly learned quite a bit about the Shell FuelSave Tips through the students and practising these simple tips has definitely contributed to our fuel efficiency. I am thankful to Shell Malaysia for this wonderful prize and I stand by my #ShellPledge to continue practising fuel efficiency in my daily driving,” she said.
Among the Shell FuelSave College Competition 2014 teams, IACT College garnered the most number of #ShellPledge and was awarded a cash prize of RM2,000 for their efforts. In November, IACT College also emerged as the champion of the overall Shell FuelSave College Competition 2014, winning RM15,000 in cash and potential internship opportunities with Shell Malaysia and its media and communications agency partners. Taylor’s University came in second, while Universiti Putra Malaysia came in third place, taking home cash prizes of RM8,000 and RM5,000 respectively.
