Kuala Lumpur, 15 May 2017 – Avenue K’s highly anticipated Japan Festival, which is making its return after a successful first run in 2015, kicks-off its second edition today. The 10-day of Japanese-themed festival brings shoppers the first-in-Malaysia experiences with some of the products directly imported from Japan and exclusive brands ranging from beauty, fashion, food and beverage, lifestyle products and services at the Ground Floor Atrium and the main entrance of the mall, from 12th to 21st May 2017.
Aimed at creating more excitement and valued memories to all shoppers, Avenue K Japan Festival 2017 draws together new retailers and partnerships, specially curated for shoppers and connoisseurs of Japanese culture. Celebrating its very first authentic Japanese Festival, the enlarged scale of this year’s festival reflects the increased appreciation in shoppers for authentic Japanese culture and tradition.
Taking over the Ground Floor Atrium of Avenue K, the space is transformed into the famous Japanese street, complemented with Japanese wooden carts displaying authentic Japanese products decorated with cherry blossom, which is ubiquitous symbol of Japan and are frequently depicted on traditional Japanese culture and art. A traditional Japanese tea room takes the center stage, featuring tatami mats, a traditional form of flooring found in Japanese homes and have been deeply rooted in the Japanese culture from the 12th century. The tea room houses a full-sized ceremonial tea house and is decorated with Japanese hanging lanterns on a wooden structure, surrounding the space with a traditional Japanese atmosphere.
The ceremonial launch of Avenue K Japan Festival 2017 was officiated by Mr. Yasuhiko Karigome, the First Secretary of Japan Embassy and Ms Phang Sze Sze, Deputy General Manager of Avenue K, joined by representatives from Avenue K Senior Management, Japan National Tourism Board, Japan External Trade Organization, Director of Tourism KL, and the CEO and General Manager of Fujifilm.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Ms Phang Sze Sze, Deputy General Manager of Avenue K said, “Japan has always been known as a country with a rich culture and tradition. Avenue K Japan Festival gives us an opportunity to showcase the broad range of Japanese authenticity in traditional art, craft, culture, cuisine and music instruments to our shoppers”.

Throughout the festival, shoppers will get to relish in the traditions of the festival with and will be mesmerised by a series of exciting Japanese-themed activities such as Japanese Drum, Japanese Dance where patrons are invited to dance along, Japanese costume demonstration all day long where patrons will get to experience how to wear a Yukata, live sushi and bento making, Japanese tea making ceremony, MT Washi Tape creative workshop for the families and many more.
In addition, shoppers can also look forward to the MT Washi Tape pop-up store at the main entrance happening in conjunction with Japanese Festival with unique colours and patterns, distinctive texture, exceptional characteristics which has become extremely popular in Japan. At this pop-up store, the pillar at the pop-up store will be taped and decorated in the renowned Washi tape. Fuji Film will also be showcasing the colourful compact cameras ‘Instax’ at the main entrance.
The Land of the Rising Sun’s unique arts and tastes are plentiful once more, as the highlight of the Japan Festival will be the ‘Japanese Tea Making Ceremony Competition’ where shoppers can taste the premium tea, experience and learn the art of “Japanese Tea Making” at the Maiko Tea booth located at the Ground Floor Atrium. Shoppers who spend RM 250 and above in a maximum of two combined receipts at any stores on the same day will stand a chance to participate in the ‘Japanese Tea Making Ceremony Competition’ and win a pair of ticket worth RM3,488 to OSAKA, Japan.
For a taste of Japanese sushi, shoppers are invited to take part in Sushi Challenge, sponsored by Sushi King. Shoppers will also be rewarded with vouchers, gifts and treats during the festival when they spend during the festival at any stores in Avenue K from 12 until 21 May 2017. With a minimum spending of RM50 and above in a single receipt, shoppers will get to experience ‘Japanese Bouncy Balls Scooping’, a popular traditional game among the boys. The bouncy balls are floated in the water and shoppers will get to scoop as many bouncy balls as they can until the net tears off. Shoppers are also entitled to redeem Franco meal voucher worth RM15 with a minimum spending of RM200 and above in a maximum of two combined receipts at any stores on the same day.
