Pilates is a form of exercise which concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. This helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being. Pilates concentrates on posture, balance and flexibility which are always the fitness components overlooked by fitness enthusiasts or athletes.

Health benefits of Pilates includes increased muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks (the ‘core muscles’ of your body), balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body, enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs, improved stabilisation of your spine. If Pilates is practised regularly, it will change your body for the better.

Known for creating long, strong muscles, Pilates improves your muscle tone, balances musculature, supports beautiful posture (that is the reason why Pilates is widely practiced by artists all over the world including Korea), and teaches you to move with ease and grace. All of these things can make you look and feel very fit & strong.

Pilates exercises have motivated many people to take physical fitness more seriously. A Pilates workout is a series of intelligent exercises connecting brain & muscles (mind & body integration). Just about anyone can perform in their home or office with a small amount of floor space and minimal equipment. They are not only recommended for the purposes of general exercise, fitness experts also recommend them for people who suffer from back pain as a result of various injuries or conditions.

Pilates are exercise movements much like any other. However, they do not involve any lifting or vigorous movements (relatively low impact on joints). Instead, a Pilates workout routine enhances muscle tone with simple body movements and contortions. They can be made while sitting, lying on a flat surface, kneeling or standing. Pilates is a very popular physical fitness workout for its reputed simplicity and effectiveness.

Pilates exercises are meant to focus primarily on deep abdominal muscles activation. These include muscles such as the transversus abdominus and the multifidus. These are both near the ribs, the pelvis and the spine. Working on them correctly can give you a strong core. Improper exercise can however undermine your strength at key points and leave you with significant discomfort.

Like other forms of full body exercises, it is possible to hurt yourself during Pilates. It is imporant that Pilates routines are applied properly by certified instructors with correct knowledge and experience. Improper techniques or over-exercising can cause you to hurt your neck, back or other parts of your body.

AOLove, a reputable and acredited Pilates, physiotheraphy & fitness studio was selected to conduct the program as they provide a complete range of services,  all the way from fitness programs, injury rehabilitation right up to enhancing athletic performance. Their elite Pilates Instructors are certified professionals with storng credentials that include those with Master’s in Sports Science, Bachelor’s in Exercise & Sports Science, as well as certified physiotherapists, experienced coaches & elite athletes

Its principal, Elaine Tan Yee Lin has a Masters (MSc) First Class Honours Degree in Sports Science and is a fully cerified STOTT PILATES instructor with more than 10 years of teaching experience. She has been helping many clients to achieve goals including to improve low back pain, scoliosis, weight-loss as well as ankle, knee, wrist, elbow and shoulder issues; pre- & post-natal fitness; senior citizen functionality & fitness; youth posture, fitness & athletic (including bowler & golfer) performance; celebrity performance (they need to know what muscles to engage to wear heels forever on stage / events) etc.

In her welcome address, Elaine Tan expressed that she incorporates a scientific approach of movement healing. According to her, “Movement heals, only when we do it right.”

Elaine also shared that during the course of the workshop program, one of ISN’s physiotherapists Thomas, applied pilates principles taught by her, to national diver Dato’ Pandelela Rinong and had managed to tremendously reduce her back pain in one session without physiotherapy manipulation.

Even knee pain can be corrected in 2 minutes (after correction from the roots) and back pain in 20 minutes. This efficiency once saved her client around RM 7K – 8K and gave him hope to move again, instead of relying on surgery or pain killers.

She further added, “if your treat the roots, everything will fall in place.”

“These are all helpful to quicken injury recovery of national athletes & improve their performance”, she concluded, “and help them win medals for the country.”

In his speech, a delighted En. Ahmad Faezal commended AOLove for its excellent workshop program and expressed an interest in continuing with similar programs for the various other departments at ISN.

“I believe this is moving forward for us, as we need to be relevant, to be trusted and also to be the leading excellence centre in sports medicine in the country,” he declared.

The event was concluded by the handing out of certificates to all instructors and participants.
