If the Perodua Myvi is often referred to as “the king of the road” namely due to its sheer numbers and the antics of some of its drivers, Malaysia’s best selling model will now be vying for the title “king of the track” with the introduction of the Myvi Cup in the Malaysia Speed Festival.
Following in the success of the Saga Cup which was first introduced in 2014, the Myvi Cup is a new category of racing that will be featured in MSF Superturismo beginning Round 6 of the series scheduled for 10 November at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.
An entire private initiative by Malaysia Speed Festival, the Myvi Cup is open to all models of the Perodua Myvi originally available on sale in Malaysia in various engine capacities. There will two sub-categories within the Myvi Cup – Pro and Casual, and this will be defined by the grading of drivers to be determined by the race organization.
Like the Saga Cup, critical parameters of the vehicle must be retained with only selected components permitted to be changed or upgraded for safety purposes. The cars must also be prepared and fitted with a list of compulsory safety equipment.
In order to keep the competition level and fair, a number of parameters will be regulated. The front brakes for example, must retain the original brake caliper and disc rotors while the rear original drum brakes must be retained. Brake disc rotors – including slotted and cross-drilled rotors – pads, brake shoes, and brake hoses may be replaced with direct-replacement aftermarket items but must be of original dimensions.
Competitors must also retain the stock standard engine block externally with the original throttle body and original inlet manifold. These components can be modified but the exterior must remain standard. No additional items for example additional fuel injectors and hoses are permitted to be added.
Competitors must also use the original vehicle ECU although they are allowed to flash the ECU or have an additional computer and control units added on. A replacement standalone ECU is not permitted
Participants must also use the original Perodua Myvi gearbox with only the Final Drive ratio permitted to be modified. Gear ratios may be changed and modified however, Dog Engagement gears and Sequential gear changing mechanisms or gearbox are prohibited. All cars must also be in only front-wheel drive configuration with no Limited-Slip Differentials (LSD) permitted.
“The racing philosophy at MSF has always been to make competition more accessible and affordable to the masses, and the Saga Cup has proven to be exponentially successful with more than 75 cars and almost 200 drivers taking part every round,” said MSF Superturismo Principal Adian Yein Khalid.
“The Myvi is undoubtedly Malaysia’s most popular model today – it has been for many many years so much so it is often referred to as the king of the road – and therefore the introduction of the Myvi Cup is only a natural step towards bringing greater diversity into motor racing. “
“It is also a much more modern car compared to the earlier generations of Proton Saga and this again will provide participants with another avenue to move up to. And contrary to belief, the Myvi has demonstrated that it is very quick and equally competitive in the track.”
