Kuala Lumpur, 13 November 2015 – November 11 marks the day for single people worldwide to celebrate their singlehood. As the name and date suggest, the “bare sticks” in the date “11 November” (11/11) is a symbol for singles. However, why should only couples have a special day in the calendar dedicated to celebrating their coupledom? Malaysia has over two million unmarried residents and various commitments such as family and work obligations to fulfill, it is time for Malaysia’s singles to stand up and have their day.
Today on Single’s Day, Southeast Asia’s largest mobile dating and social networking app, Paktor, celebrated singlehood and connected people with new friends. On 11 November, Paktor users stand a chance to receive a lunchtime surprise when they use the app from 00:00 to 10:00 on the day itself and fill up a special in-app form with their particulars. The lunchtime surprise – consisting of a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a handwritten note – happened from 11:00 to 13:00. In addition, a video documenting the surprise and behind-the-scenes was released on Paktor Malaysia Facebook page and YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/_G-TkEi2zCk).
22-year-old Fang Jing, an avid Paktor user was surprised to find the unexpected gifts presented to her by a model.
“It was definitely a wonderful surprise by Paktor, as this is not what I expected on a Wednesday afternoon and it’s great of Paktor to think of the singles. It was a very thoughtful gesture.”
Soon Eu Leon, a Sales Executive and another lucky Paktor winner, feels that Paktor is a great app not only to find an other half but also to meet new people out of their comfort zone.
“I’m a very open person and I’ve always like meeting new people – making new friends that you can engage in good conversations with. If I hadn’t swiped right on the Paktor app I would not have the opportunity to get Krispy Kreme doughnuts and this great handwritten note!” laughed the 25-year-old.
“I will not have known about Single’s Day have it not been for Paktor. Now I have the opportunity to celebrate being single along with my single friends!”
On why Paktor is doing this in Kuala Lumpur, Joseph Phua, CEO and co-Founder of Paktor shared, “Being single shouldn’t be a day that is only associated with online shopping or just a ‘phase in life’. If we can celebrate Valentine’s Day when you’re a couple, there is no reason not to have a great time on Single’s Day if you’re single, so we want to bring that fun and excitement to people in Malaysia.”
This is the first such event carried out by Paktor on the back of a 20% increase number of swipes during this day in 2014. On this day, Paktor gave away roses provided by Flower Advisor Malaysia and doughnuts sponsored by Krispy Kreme at four different locations around Kuala Lumpur; the outside areas of Mid Valley, Sunway Pyramid, Berjaya Times Square, Plaza Shah Alam and also in Singapore and Taipei. To share the love with all single people on Single’s Day, these giveaways were aimed at putting a smile on your face.

Paktor was founded in July 2013 with the mission of connecting singles in Asia through technology-enabled platforms. To date, Paktor’s platforms have grown rapidly across the region and established leadership positions in each of the company’s key markets in Southeast Asia. With one of the largest user bases in the region of over 6 million, Paktor has facilitated 5 billion profile reviews to date. Leveraging Paktor’s carefully crafted proprietary technology and first-mover advantage in the region, Paktor’s flagship app has become the most successful social networking app for singles in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. The company is poised to become the first in the region to provide a comprehensive suite of products across the dating vertical, focused on creating value for its users and, in the process, developing the most diverse and largest network in its markets.
Paktor emphasises anonymity, locality, and usability for our users. We find out who you’d like to meet nearby and create the opportunity to connect you with them, only if they’re interested as well. This helps curate who you talk to and who gets to talk to you. Or, to put it simply, we bring people together – without the pressure. After all, that’s what Paktor means.
